Chesapeake Wings
On Maryland's Chesapeake Bay in the early fall there is a yearly event warns of the approach of winter. That warning is the return of the Canada Geese to Maryland's corn fields and waterways. You can hear the honking of the geese far off before you can see them on the wing. They fly in “V” shaped formations high in the clear October sky calling to each another as they go. Hearing them for the first time in the fall of the year is a reminder, a promise, that the world goes on as it has before recorded time.
I enjoy watching the “V” formations of these determined creatures as they cross the sky. The individual birds jockey for position in the “V”. An exhausted single bird will fall off from the duty of leading the formation, and another one would screw its courage up and the position at the point of the “V”. The “V”s themselves are irregular. One wing of the “V” might be perfectly straight while other wing is bent and gaped as birds adjust their positions. Or one wing will be longer than the other. On occasion while crossing high over the Chesapeake Bay on the Bay Bridge in the fall I have seen a sky full flights, "V"s, of geese working their way across the sky.
Some icy mornings when my dog and I are walking in the brown fields near our home we both hear the pop, pop, pop of hunters shooting at geese on the wing not far off. This sound reminds me of how cork sounds being pulled from a wine bottle. I wonder what motivates these hunters to wait in the cold damp air for geese to come into range of their guns. I guess it could be a nip or two of brandy or whiskey . Or maybe the hunters enjoy the friendship they share as much as they do the hunting, a fellowship like the one exhibited by their prey.
Someday there might be a Maryland winery will develop a wine bottle label depicting a winter scene with flights of geese on the wing crossing a blue-gray sky and below freezing water, fields of corn stalks brown and bent and at the water’s edge hunters in their blinds awaiting their targets on the wing. I want to pop the cork of that bottle of wine and toast my Chesapeake Wing Memories.
