The History of the Church Key: The crown cork" was invented in 1898 as a way to seal glass bottles, especially beer bottles. A stamped metal device was developed to open these caps. These bottle openers did resemble a large key. In 1935, beer in metal cans was introduced to the market. D.F. Sampson of the American Can Company invented a pointed tool to be used to pierce the top of the can. The origin of the term, "Church Key" is lost to history, but associating beer with the idea of a church has its humorous connotation.
